Carmichael College, the highest seat of learning in Rangpur Division, came into existence on November 10, 1916. Soon after its nationalization on January 01, 1963 the Zoology department started its journey with a separate entity during the academic session 1963-64. Initially, the department started in a room of the K.B. Hall under the leadership of Mr. Mohammad Sadrul Hasan. The Zoology Department was shifted to the new Science Building (2nd building) during the Academic session 1964-65. The students of the department… have been doing excellent results in different examinations every year. This has been possible due to untiring efforts of a group of efficient teachers and employees of the department. To facilitate studies, the department has a well equipped seminar library which has more than 8000 books and journals. The department has also more than 100 microscopes, necessary chemicals and equipments to carry on research work. Moreover, it has also multimedia classroom and internet facilitates to make use of information technology. The greatest asset of the department is its museum which is larger and richer than any one of its kind in Bangladesh. A dedicated teacher, Mr. Bhupendra Nath Biswas had collected specimens for the museum for several years. In this museum, there are about 200 species of Invertebrate animals, 125 species of fish, 25 species of Amphibians, 30 species of Reptiles, about 40 species of Birds and Mammals, Rare specimens of the museum are Lungfish, Peripatus, Petromyzon, Exocoetus, Pristis etc. Some invaluable and rare specimens of slab, model, slide, skeleton & embryo have enriched the museum. These invaluable materials may be used as raw materials for further research.
